Winchester Farm (Lafayette Road) |
Details |
Formerly a 200+ acre farm known as Lawn Farm and owned by Ezra H. Winchester along Layfayette Road, Portsmouth, NH. On April 5, 1927, a fire consumed many of the outbuildings when the property was known as the Lafayette Manor estate and used as a golf course. The main house or mansion house survived the fire. In 1937, the property was up for auction when army vet Theodore F. Jones of Rutland, Vermont, purchased the property with plans to turn it into a dairy farm. By 1952, there was talk of turning the property into a mobile home park, and in July 1956, the city approved a 96-unit trailer home park on the site, presented by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Desfosses of Scarborough, Maine. |
