Summary
|
Transcription of the diary of Supply Foss Trefethen (SFT) of Rye, N.H. SFT was a shipwright at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and house carpenter. The diary starts Jul. 12, 1856 and continues with some gaps (1858, 1864-1865, 1869, 1871-1873, 1875, 1884, 1889-1890 and 1894) until Oct. 13, 1907 (SFT dies on Oct. 14, 1907). SFT discusses prices of goods and services, wages and work at the navy yard, weather, crops, local and national politics, births, deaths and marriages of friends, family and local personalities, major local, state, national and world events (see timeline pdf). Note: "went to the center" = going to Rye center (N.H.) "went to town" = going to Portsmouth (N.H.) "gondola" = gundalow The original diaries are part of the Rye Historical Society collection. The diaries were transcribed, edited and annotated by Larry B. Keech.
