Details |
This collection of snapshots by Lawrence G. Straus was used for a 1967 architectural survey by architectural historian James L. Garvin identifying the Colonial, Federal, and representative Greek Revival buildings to be demolished in the Vaughan Street Urban Renewal Project (North End) Portsmouth, NH. Original photographs were taken on June 15 and June 16, 1967—reprints published in September 1988. According to the survey, "no structures of significance were noted on Bridge, Congress, Garrett's, DuPray, Wendell Streets or Courts. Maplewood and Raynes Avenues have yet to be surveyed." A copy of Garvin's survey is retained in the accession file, and when applicable, his approximate house construction dates are used in the record descriptions. Many of the buildings featured in the collection were demolished during urban renewal; however, some were saved and incorporated in the redevelopment known as The Hill. |
