Located on Ceres Street, near the corner of Bow and Market Streets where there was a spring of fresh water. Also known as Old Ferry Landing where Rice's ferry carried passengers from Kittery. According to a January 1925 "Reminiscences of Local Interest" article in the Portsmouth Herald, the Spring Market essential commodities were fish and meat with meat occupying two stalls. The market also carried butter, eggs, vegetables, fruits and berries, in season, from farms in Kittery, Eliot and other farms upriver. Farm and garden products were sold by women who piloted wherries to the market. Around 1900 until the 1920s, the building was leased by the city to the Portsmouth, Kittery and York Street Railway as its ferry landing. About 1926, building used again as a fish market. Condemned by the city and demolished in Spring 1936. |

Ledger of Lewis A. Bruce (1817-1901), house, sign and ship painter with entries starting January 1, 1849 and continuing through April 1855.
