Ledger of Lewis A. Bruce (1817-1901), house, sign and ship painter with entries starting January 1, 1849 and continuing through April 1855. Along with the customer's name and the work he is doing, the ledger tracks the prices charged for the work and materials. Entries include painting carriages including wagons, carts and sleds as well as furniture including glass cases, lights, meat chests, boards, awnings, cloth and tins. He also lists graining doors, varnishing wagons, painting chairs, varnishing trunks, painting scales, painting chambers and stairs, painting awning posts, painting iron fences, varnishing safes, painting tin pails, painting the burying ground fence, priming shutters, painting fan blinds, painting fire blinds, fixing paint in orchestra, etc. Bruce also includes in his business activities such things as marbling mantle pieces, enameling ship cabins, wallpapering rooms, finishing boards, boiling oil, white washing rooms, glazing and cutting glass for lanterns, windows, sashes, etc. The ledger also includes entries for materials used in his work such as quarts and gallons of paint in various colors, quarts and gallon of varnish, straw paint, oil, rolls of wallpaper, sheets of sand paper, colors for graining, red lead, glue, glazier diamonds, putty, paint and varnish brushes, etc. Customers include numerous Portsmouth residents and businesses, ship owners and public buildings. There are also occasional customers across the river in Kittery, Maine. Some of ships he paintings are the schooner Cocheco, schooner Mary M. Wood, schooner Sacramento, etc. Houses he paints are the Beck house, the Chase house, the Long house, Curtis house, Dodge house, Hampton house, Ladd house, 2 Parker Street, 10 Court Street, Tyler Jarvis house, and the Upham house. He also paints public buildings and businesses, etc. such as the Carter's Saloon, Church Hill Store, Congress Hall, Portsmouth Academy, Rockingham Bank, as well as the meeting house, school house, the Spring Market, Staver's Store, Townsend School, Tucker's Store, etc., as well as farms and barns. Bruce paints chairs and provides glass for Portsmouth furniture makers such as Samuel Dockum, Edmund Brown and Charles Colcord. He does work for carpenters such as Daniel Marden, Thomas Martin and Daniel Philbrick as well as ship carpenters such as John Mugridge, William Tucker and John Hodgdon. Numerous merchants are listed for various projects often glazing glass and fixing display pieces.
