In 1673 Capt. John Pickering, 2d, gave the town a strip of land running through his possessions to the mill-dam, for a highway. Originally known as Divinity St. and the Parade when it was used for training of the town's militia in colonial times. As late as 1813 the section from Market Square to State Street was called Court Street. |
