Details |
Acquired by the town by 1754 for building a "pest asylum" for isolating those with contagious diseases. In 1896 a new "pest asylum' was built on Jones Avenue and the following year, the old asylum blew down in a gale. Now known as Lady Isle. By 1901 as Belle Isle. Originally Captain John Salter (1744-1814) built his home on the island. A number of Marston's lived there as late as 1881 when it was known as Marston's Island. In 1899 it was named Keeper's Island for the bridge contractor William H. Keeper. |
