Oracle House |
Details |
Built ca. 1702-9? and 1730. Earliest known location was directly behind the North Meeting House (site of the North Church). By September 1793, the house was moved to the corner of Court and Middle streets, near the new hay market (now Haymarket Square). At this time, Charles Peirce published the "Oracle of the Day" newspaper after first publishing the newspaper three months earlier on Washington Street. In 1797, Peirce moved his business to Daniel Street. In August 1937, the Oracle House was saved from demolition when it was once again moved. This time the house was relocated to the corner of Court and Marcy streets where it presently stands. Its current location is believed to be the site of the 1634 Great House of John Mason. |
