Langdon-Elwyn Farm (Elwyn Road) |
Details |
Located at 45 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, NH. Now the Urban Foresty Center. The Langdon-Elwyn farm was occupied by the same family for 300+ years. Gov. John Langdon was born on the farm. The Langdon cemetery on the property is believed to include slaves of the early Langdons. In June 1964, descendent John Elwyn Stone donated a portion of the farm for the new Christ Church on Lafayette Road. The old Christ Church had burned the previous year. In April 1969, a fire burned two barns. Bequeathed the Langdon-Elwyn farm (about 182 acres) to the State of New Hampshire for either a tree farm, bird sanctuary or wildlife preservation. The State acquired the land in 1976, and the Urban Forestry Center opened the following year. In Oct. 1977, an addition was added to the living quarters for the State caretaker. On Dec. 10, 2002, a fire destroyed a historic barn. |
