Provenance |
Celia Thaxter studied china painting in 1877 with John Appleton Brown. This vase is part of Lyman Rutledge Isles of Shoals Collection given to Portsmouth Public Library in 1965; transferred to Athenaeum in 1995 at request of his son, Edward. Translation of text:" [The] always-seeing eye of Zeus Morios now watches, and bright-eyed Athena." Sophocles, "Oedipus at Colonus" line 705, in a choral song about the olive tree. There are a couple of errors in the Greek lettering. |
