Description |
View of the former Elm House window at 35 Bow Street, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. Reportedly, the window came from the Elm House, a house of ill-repute, at the foot of State Street. In the early 1920s, the State Street property was razed during the construction of the Memorial Bridge approach. The Elm House owner Eva White salvaged the window before demolition and moved it to Bow Street. The image comes from "They Came To Fish" by Ray Brighton, first published in 1973 and revised in 1979 and 1994. In the 1979 edition, the caption was as follows: "Eva White who operated the famed house of entertainment, Elm House, was so attached to this balcony -- now on a Bow Street building -- that when her hotel was razed she had it saved and taken to her new abode.
