Description |
The aftermath of the S.S. Brookline of the Atlantic Corporation crashing into the wharf and business belonging to Fred C. Lindsey on Ceres Street (the rear of 137 Market Street), Portsmouth, NH. View is taken from the Piscataqua River. In the upper right is the Moffatt-Ladd House. The accident occurred on May 18, 1920. According to court documents, after departing the Atlantic Corporation upriver, the Brookline was escorted by three tugs until it proceeded under its own steam down the Piscataqua River. The ship lost control and struck the Lindsey passenger boat Marion, which sank in two, before slamming into and destroying the Lindsey wharf. The accident destroyed the Nervy, a Lindsey boat in drydock. Two more vessels owned by Lindsey were on top of the wharf, a passenger boat Flora and a big yawl boat. Both were "practically annihilated and destroyed beyond repair." A row boat was also destroyed. See MS072 B5 F13 for admiralty court case: Fred C. Lindsey v. United States of America, Owner of the Steamship "Brookline." |
