Description |
The Hart-Treat House on its original location, 107 Deer Street, Portsmouth, NH. During the Vaughan Street Urban Renewal Project, the house was moved to The Hill, c. 1972. Built prior to 1761, the house was owned by Samuel & Bridgit Hart. On Sept. 11, 1761, they conveyed the property to Samuel Beck. On March 31, 1825, George Ham, watchmaker, sold it to Samuel Treat. The Treat family ran a stone and marbleworks business across the street on the corner of Deer and Vaughan streets. According to Arthur Harriman who lived in the house and was a descendant of the Treat family, Samuel Treat placed the balcony above the doorway when the former provincial State House in Market Square was dismantled in 1836. This was believed to be the balcony from which Pres. George Washington addressed the town in 1789. The old State House steps were also repurposed. The east end steps were placed in front of this house, and the west end steps were in front of the Meserve-Webster House on nearby Vaughan Street. There is also a 4" x 6" enlarged copy and 4" x 5" copy proof. The 4" x 6" copy has writing on back. En verso: The Hart Treat House / Erected prior to 1761 / Sold by Samuel Hart to Samuel Beck in 1761 / The old iron balcony was removed from / the old colonial State House in 1836 / The Declaration of Independence was read / from this balcony the first time in the state / Pres. Washington and Royal Governors have graced this balcony when it adorned / the old colonial State House. |
