Description |
View of the Mendum family home at 9 Fleet Street (later 66-68-70 Fleet) on the corner of Porter Street, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. From the 1820s until early 20th century, this was the home of John Mendum (1790-1848) and Adaline Perkins Mendum (1800-1881) and their twelve children. While undated, most of the images in this collection are from about 1900. In the 1900 Census, widowed Mendum sisters Harriet Mendum Freeman (1829-1909) and Almena Mendum Dennett (1837-1904) are living there with Almena's son Willis Mendum Dennett (1869-1929). Who Belle might be remains a mystery. It might be Almena's middle name, which started with a B. Another theory is Belle could be Alice Isabel Freeman Mendum (1858-1934). Her husband William Jones Mendum was the grandson of John Mendum. William was also the brother of John A. Mendum (b.1848) who was acquiring each heir's share in the property. |
