Early view of the Liberty Pole and the Liberty Bridge on Water Street (now Marcy Street) in the South End, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. The Liberty Bridge crossed Puddle Dock, a Piscataqua River inlet that once extended into present day Strawbery Banke Museum. The image comes from "They Came To Fish" by Ray Brighton, first published in 1973 and revised in 1979 and 1994. In the 1979 edition, the caption was as follows: "The generation that would remember Liberty Bridge and the Liberty Pole is gone, but the span once straddled Puddle Dock." |
