Description |
The Wentworth-Winebaum House moved onto a barge at Noble's Island, Portsmouth, NH. Built for Revolutionary patriot Col. Joshua Wentworth about 1770, the house is considered an outstanding example of Portsmouth architecture; the elaborate interior woodwork was thought to have been fabricated for Gov. John Wentworth’s mansion in Wolfeboro, NH. In the 1940s, Harry Winebaum used the house as the office for his wholesale and retail news service. To avoid demolition during urban renewal in 1970, Winebaum donated the house to Strawbery Banke Museum. With funds raised, the house was floated by barge to the museum in 1973. Today, the building is a private residence. |
