Snapshot of the former Portsmouth Academy, later Portsmouth Public Library, and now Portsmouth Historical Society, 10 Middle Street on the corner of Islington Street, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. The image comes from "Rambles About Portsmouth" by Ray Brighton, published in 1994. The caption was as followed: "Portsmouth Academy. built in 1806-1808 from designs prepared and executed by a local contractor, James Nutter, the building served as an academy for about 60 years. During that span William C. Harris was the teacher. Today it is Portsmouth's heavily over-burdened public library. Author photo." |
