Description |
View of the Hodgdon and Kershaw Oyster House Restaurant next to the North Church in Market Square, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. During the late 19th and early 20th century, women were often denied entry to fine dining without a man accompanying them. Some establishments offered a dining room on the second floor with a separate entry to accommodate women. In this photograph, there are two signs for the "Ladies & Gents Cafe, Upstairs," which most likely indicates a segregation of the sexes. |
