En verso of one copy: "This photograph taken June 29th, 1891 represents some of the Proprietors of the Portsmouth Athenaeum, who call themselves "The Athenaeum Boys." They usually assemble there to discuss Theology, Politics, Et. Cetera, daily from 5 to 6 p.m. It was taken for the purpose of being sent to Pay Inspector George H. Lyon, U.S. Navy, now stationed at San Francisco, California, as a pleasant memoir from "the Boys" to him who during his residence here on duty at this naval station daily met with them to discuss and argue the usual topics. This is a copy of the photograph sent and is presented to the Rev. Curtis Hoyt Dickins, minister of the Church of Christ (Universalist) by Thomas Neil to be placed in the cornerstone of the new church. Dated Oct. 23, 1896, 10:30 a.m." Photograph was taken prior to the 1892-renovations and depicts the style of the Reading Room from about the 1850s until 1891. This is one of three similar images. |
