Description |
A 1827 Federal and Italianate style church, formerly the Methodist Church and now Temple Israel at 200 State Street, opposite of Penhallow Street, Portsmouth, NH. Image and report (see link) from the Historic District Survey, 1982-1983, by the Portsmouth Advocates, Inc. According to the report, this is "a very plain, beautiful classical design, the least-changed of Portsmouth's Federal church buildings. Nevertheless, the color scheme of cream with dark brown trim is fitting for the building as it exists (with Italiante eaves)." A modern, large addition for social hall and other functions was added to the rear and at right. A sign on the lawn advertises Bingo every Wednesday night at the Temple Israel. |
