Description |
The Dennett Homestead, 73 Prospect Street, Portsmouth, NH. was built in 1681 on the Christian Shore. When the house was built in the late 1600s by John Dennett, the Christian Shore was considered an outpost. In the late 1700s, the house became the property of descendent Ephraim Dennett, who married Lydia Colby, a widow of Captain Colby who was employed by Sir William Pepperell. Lydia continued to live in the house after Ephraim's death, and was known for the quality of the wool from her sheep. She then married Judge John Plummer of Rochester. In later years, the house became known as the Beehive, perhaps because of the number of families that resided there. Building has since been demolished. |
