Description |
Built after 1725, the Whidden-Ward House at 411 The Hill off Deer Street, Portsmouth, NH. Also known as the Michael Whidden Jr. House, Michael Whidden III was a builder responsible for the construction of many of the fine homes in Portsmouth and in particular the North End. He built the Assembly House, Meserve-Webster House and the Peter Livius House, which have all been demolished. Still standing is the Moffatt-Ladd House, now a historic house museum. The Whidden home was saved during urban renewal and moved to The Hill. After Michael Whidden's death in 1773 his house in Deer St. was purchased by Nahum Ward who extensively renovated it giving it most of its surviving late-Georgian appearance. Now knnown as the Whidden-Ward House. The house was originally located at 115-117 Deer Street, and it was moved to The Hill during the Vaughan Street Urban Renewal Project. Image and report (see link) from the Historic District Survey, c. 1982, by the Portsmouth Advocates, Inc. Originally 115-117 Deer Street. |
