Description |
View of the Colonial Theater, Kol's Deli and other businesses, Congress Street, Portsmouth, NH. The building on the right was known as the Rogers Block, an early 1700s house of Rev. Nathaniel Rogers that was raised one story for commercial businesses on the first floor. This building burned in 1964. The Colonial Theater building marquee was the entryway into the 1920-theater on the corner of Porter and Church street. The theater was destroyed by a fire, but the marquee building was salvaged and remodeled. The building on the left was originally the home of Hunking Wentworth, a patriot in the Revolutionary War, and the front of the house faced Church Street. Both the old theater entry building and the Wentworth house would later become the home of Eagle Photo. These buildings were demolished in 2005/6 for a large brick commercial and residential complex. |
