Description |
Members of the launch party for the Haverhill pose on the stairs leading to the launch platform at the Shattuck shipyard, Newington, NH. The members were the following individuals: (front row) Gov. Henry W. Keyes and wife Frances Parkinson Keyes; (center) Dorothy Jackson, wife of Robert Jackson, vice president of Shattuck shipyard; Louis H. Shattuck, president of the Shattuck shipyard; unknown woman; (back row) Robert Jackson (left) and Fernando W. Hartford (right), newspaper owner and secretary of the Shattuck shipyard. The Haverhill was the fourth wooden steamship to launch from Shattuck shipyard. The sponsor of the ship was writer Frances Parkinson Keyes, wife of the New Hampshire Gov. Henry W. Keyes. The ship was named after Keyes' hometown in New Hampshire. Frances Keyes read an original poem at the launching: Go forth sturdy ship from the shores of New Hamsphire As stalwart and strong as the state of your birth And bear on the ocean, where you venture The message she sends to the rest of the earth. Go show all the world that your state stands for courage, Which never will falter and never will quail-- For truth--and for faith--and for far- reaching vision-- Then you never will stop--and you never will fail. Part of an original album returned to owner. Digital copy only. |
