Description |
Black and white copy photograph of the mantelpiece and fireplace in the Governor's Council Chamber in the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. From "The Seacoast New Hampshire: A Visual History" by Robert C. Gilmore and Bruce E. Ingmire, the caption is as follows: "Photograph of the Governor's Council Chamber mantelpiece in the Wentworth-Coolidge House. The photo was taken when the home was owned by the Cushing family of Roxbury, Massachusetts, and before it was sold to the Coolidges in 1885. One theory gives the Dearing [Deering] family craftsmen credit for the woodwork of the mantelpiece, and the design source is thought to be The Gentleman's and Builder's Repository or Architecture Displayed by Edward Hoppies, London, editions 1738 and 1748. Courtesy of the New Hampshire Historical Society." Educational research purposes only.
