Description |
View of an unidentified gentleman in a trap carriage and horse standing in front of Joseph Haven Thacher Apothecary on the corner of State and Pleasant streets, Portsmouth, NH. The unidentified man is most likely Joseph Haven Thacher. To the left is a sign for the "City Clerk's Office." The building still stands, and the first floor has been most recently home to a real estate office and then a bank. Behind the woman on the right is the side entrance to the old States & Union newspaper building on the other corner of State and Pleasant. This building was home most recently to the State Street Saloon, which burned in 2017. En verso of image is a 3¢ Foreign Exchange (Green) revenue stamp with a stamped number, possibly the date of 1865. En verso of frame in ink is handwritten the following: Taken in Portsmouth 1863 / cor. Pleasant and State sts. |
