Description |
View of the Daniel Street arch during the Return of the Sons & Daugthers, Market Square, Portsmouth, NH. Written on the arch is "Union Is Strength" with both "North" and "Kearsarge" on the left and "South" and "Alabama" on the right. The image comes from "They Came To Fish" by Ray Brighton, first published in 1973 and revised in 1979 and 1994. In the 1979 edition, the caption was as follows: "These two photos from the Herald-Staples Collection are of scenes from the famous Return of the Sons in 1873 [1900]. One is Market Street [Daniel Street] and the other at Dover and Islington Streets." The arch appears to be the same one used in September 1900. |
