Description |
Langley Boardman House, Larkin House and Larkin-Ladd House, Middle Street, Portsmouth, NH. On the right is the Langley Boardman House, 152 Middle Street. Boardman was an important craftsman and real estate developer. Although the house was built circa 1803-1806, he did not live in the house until after 1815. The house to the left of the Boardman House at 160 Middle Street was purchased from John Locke, housewright by Samuel Larkin in 1808. In 1809, he purchased a strip of land from Boardman in order to add an addition. In 1827, Larkin advertised the house for rent saying that it was recently operated by a Mrs. Stevens as a boarding house with upper and lower kitchens, two large parlors and 10 chambers. Both house are good architecturalexamples of three-story Federal styles. From Arthur Harriman's unpublished work, the following poem was written above the photograph: Within our city renowned for beautiful doorways, there's that charming atmosphere of olden days, with colonial mansions 'neath stately trees, their balustraded stairways of grace and ease, there's furniture the envy of connoisseur's eye, the cabinet makers art of days gone by, fluted pilasters embellished with sculptured frieze, decorated wainscotted walls within scenes that please, graceful arches and mantles the acme of carvers skill, in these home of the past we find tradition and thrills. |
