Description |
View from Middle Street of a commercial property with two buildings occupied by Auto City's Tire Town at 253 Middle Street, Portsmouth, NH. Previously, this property was occupied by Portsmouth Motor Mart. The one-story concrete building (Building 'A') was originally a gasoline service station. The two-story brick building with one-story brick addition (Building 'B') was formerly a stable with living quarters (second floor) for the Sinclair Mansion next door. The tower of Building B is visible at right. Both buildings were demolished. At left is the Sinclair Mansion, and at right is the Preston house (also demolished). Property was acquired first by Crown International Inc. in 1971, and then "after numerous difficulties and legal entanglements" by the Portsmouth Housing Authority (PHA) on August 8, 1973. This property was one of three parcels that were the future site of the PHA high-rise senior housing project known as Margeson Apartments. The PHA offices were also moved there from 25 Vaughan Street. Image and report (see link) was for the "Appraisal of Esther Elsea Property E/S Middle Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire" report by John L. Hyde of John L. Hyde & Associates. Date of appraisal was August 25, 1967. In the report description of the neighborhood, this property was described as the following: "Virtually all of the structures [in the neighborhood] are well-maintained and the overall area still maintains elements of class and prestige. The only inharmonious feature is the subject itself, which incorporates a strong commercial use in a typical automotive-type commercial unit." |
