Lady Pepperrell House, Kittery Point, Maine. A series of slides were taken in the fall of 1966 by Joseph Goldberg, a graduate student who was gathering material for a dissertation on colonial shipbuilding at the University of North Carolina. Written on the slide is the following information: Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Lady Pepperrell House; built 1760. Whipple Road. Built for Lady Pepperrell, widow of Sir William, she was Mary, daughter of Grove Hirst, a Boston merchant & granddaughter of Judge Samuel Sewell. Pair of dolphins, symbol of Pepperrell fortune built on sea ventures, over front door (over) Sir William Pepperrell "the Piscataway Trader" was considered "the richest man in the colonies; his wealth estimated at 250,000 pound sterling." |
