Description |
Aerial view of downtown Portsmouth, NH. Undated. In the North End (left side), the new Maplewood Avenue Extension can be seen cutting through the recently bulldozed neighborhood as part of the Vaughan Street Urban Renewal Project. Along Hanover Street, the Wentworth-Winebaum home is still in situ. On June 4, 1973, the house was moved by barge down river to Hancock Street and become part of Strawbery Banke Museum. The image comes from "They Came To Fish" by Ray Brighton, first published in 1973 and revised in 1979 and 1994. In the 1979 edition, the caption was as follows: "This aerial view of the city and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was taken from a spot in the air probably just west of the Immaculate Conception Church, which doesn't appear in the photo, although the Advent Christian across the street does. The picture was made before the two-decker parking lot was removed at High and Hanover Streets." |
