View from the combination animal drinking fountain and gaslight lamppost in Market Square toward the former Pythian Hall, also known as the Pickering Block, at the intersection of Market and Daniel streets, Portsmouth, NH. Undated. There is a man standing at the top of a flagpole. The image comes from "They Came To Fish" by Ray Brighton, first published in 1973 and revised in 1979 and 1994. In the 1979 edition, the caption was as follows: "We go back to the gas lamp era for this Market Square scene that has long been gone, and leave the reader to put a name to the stores that now exist in the vicinity." En verso on is the stamp for Garland W. Patch of 372 Court Street, Portsmouth, NH. File Number 402. |
