Description |
The Col. Joseph Whipple House at its original location on State Street, Portsmouth, NH. The house was moved to Middle Street to make way for a bank parking lot. A series of slides were taken in the fall of 1966 by Joseph Goldberg, a graduate student who was gathering material for a dissertation on colonial shipbuilding at the University of North Carolina. Written on the slide is the following information: Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Colonel Joseph Whipple House. Built about 1760, corner of State & Chestnut streets. He was born in Kittery, Maine--1737. Was employed in counting house in Newburyport while his brother was at sea. Later both were prosperous merchants--Joseph, the most successful. He was married in 1763 & lived in this house. He owned much land in New Hampshire & also engaged in the lumber trade. Large window on left end is at the stairway which is wide. Some interior details are very similar to Moffatt-Ladd House. |
