Retired police officer Roland Smart poses in front of his ancestral home at 64 Mt. Vernon Street in the South End, Portsmouth, NH. The image comes from "They Came To Fish" by Ray Brighton, first published in 1973 and revised in 1979 and 1994. In the 1979 edition, the caption was as follows: "Photographer H. Leroy Doucette induced former Portsmouth Police Officer Roland Smart to pose in front of the Mt. Vernon Street home built by his great grandfater, Richard Smart, from the profits of the first privateer cruise in the War of 1812." |
