Description |
Residence of W.J. Newell, Nebraska. Written on back: 'Somewhere in Nebraska the home of one of grandmother Cate's brothers. He came to the Cate golden wedding and gave grandma and grandpa one dozen teaspoons made of Nebraska gold.' Lafayette V. Newell (1833-1914) was a Portsmouth portrait and landscape photographer who operated a successful business at 31 Congress Street and also at 1 High Street. A native of Barnstead, New Hampshire, he opened his Portsmouth business in 1883. In 1886, he admitted Elroy C. Nickerson as his business partner. Before going into photography, Newell was a teacher of writing, a bookkeeper, and was in the grocery trade. |
