Summary |
Program for the Church of Christ (known as the Universalist Church), located on the corner of Pleasant Street and Junkins Avenue in Portsmouth. The cover of the program includes an illustration of the church. Inside is a "topic card" for 1898, listing all of the sermon topics and Bible verses for the year. The back cover of the program lists the officers of the church for 1898. Rev. Curtis Hoyt Dickins was president, William Nelson Noyes was vice president, Ella Lowd was secretary, and Mabel Shedd was treasurer. Committees and their members are also listed. The original Universalist Church on Pleasant Street was built of wood in 1808 and burned in 1896. The second church, built on the site of the first and made of brick, was completed in 1897. Rev. Curtis Hoyt Dickins was ordained as a minister in the Universalist Church in Portsmouth on July 10, 1894. He served as minister there from 1894 to 1898 before being appointed as a chaplain in the United States Navy on November 11, 1898. |
