Universalist Society formally organized in 1777. Met in several buildings, including meetinghouses of other denominations. In 1784 they erected their own meetinghouse on Vaughan Street. Work on the Pleasant Street church began in March 1807. A group of seventy men contracted to build it at their own expense.Burned in 1896. |

In 1713 the Congregational Church in Portsmouth split into two parishes, the North and South. The South Parish remained in the original church building, The Old South Meeting House, while the North Church built a new building in what is now Market Square.
