South Parish Sunday School (Court Street) |
Details |
Meeting house built circa 1718 in Durham, NH, and moved by the Independent Congregational Society in 1761 to Court Street in Portsmouth, NH. Also known as Walton's Meeting House and the South Vestry. In 1822, the Unitarian South Church purchased the building and used it as its Sunday School from Nov. 16, 1828 to Feb. 15, 1857. In 1857, the church had the building demolished and replaced with a new chapel on the site, which still stands today at 300 Court Street. The building was often rented by the Portsmouth School Department for various schools including the city-run African School in 1832-1833, and then later from 1845-1846 to probably about 1851-1852. |
