Puddle Dock Neighborhood |
Details |
A neighborhood within the South End of Portsmouth named after Puddle Dock, a pre-colonial waterway that flowed from the Piscataqua River through present day Prescott Park and Strawbery Banke Museum. By 1904, the tidal inlet was mostly filled in. By the 20th century Puddle Dock was a densely-populated working class neighborhood made up of African American, Jewish, Irish, English, Canadian, Italian, Polish and Russian families. Boundaries of the neighborhood may differ among various residents, but it is commonly referred to as the area in what is presently Strawbery Banke Museum. Some may extend the neighborhood to an area between Court Street, Washington Street, Gates Street, and the Piscataqua River. Others may further qualify it to only include one side of the above mentioned streets. |
