Gift to the City of Portsmouth by sisters Josie (1858-1949) and Mary (1855-1939) Prescott, two spinster school teachers who taught at Haven and Franklin schools. In the 1930s, the sisters used their inheritance from their deceased brother Charles E. Prescott to purchase much of the waterfront property along Water Street (now Marcy Street), which were once home to brothels, saloons, and other types of establishments. The buildings were demolished including their childhood home and replaced with gardens. In 1939, the park was named for their father Charles S. Prescott. In 1954, in accordance with Josie's will, the park was given to the city. Over time, the waterfront park has expanded to include 10 acres. |
