Portsmouth Stone |
Details |
In 1803, the Portsmouth Stone was placed on the corner of Vaughan and Congress streets, once the busiest in Portsmouth. The stone marked the beginning of the road north to the Piscataqua Bridge (connecting Newington and Durham) and into the NH interior. It also served as a terminus for the old stage coach line from Boston. Eventually, due to increased traffic congestion, the city removed the stone, and for awhile, the stone stood on a city councilman's lawn. Later, the stone ended up at the city landfill; however, before it was buried, a teamster for the Coolidge family alerted J. Templeman Coolidge, owner of the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion, and Coolidge had the stone placed on the grounds of the mansion. In the spring of 1973, the stone was returned to its original site, now the Vaughan Mall, a pedestrian thoroughfare. |
