361 Hanover St. opposite Pearl St. Built 1845-46. Engineering by Charles T. James. Architecture attributed to Jeremiah S. Young, agent. Formerly Portsmouth Steam Factory and Kearsarge Mills. Converted to the Portsmouth Machine Company with an iron foundry in the 1890s, and by 1902, it was closed and boarded up. In 1903, the Portsmouth Athletic Club used the vacant building for its Midwinter Fair. In 1906, the Eastern Forge Company of Nashua bought the building, and within four years, the Roland M. Baker Company occupied most of the building with Ellery Twist Drill Co. occupying space in the building. Later occupied by the Brooks Motor Sales. A fire in 1939 burned the building, and only the first floor was rebuilt for the car dealership. |
