Jaffrey, George House (Daniel and Linden streets) |
Details |
Built 1720-1730 for George Jaffrey II (1682-1749), treasurer for the Province of New Hampshire and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Described as a massive, U-shaped mansion that stood on a slope of Church Hill along Linden Street and faced Daniel Street. The property stayed in the extended family until the mid-1800s when the Goodrich family purchased the home. In September 1919, furniture dealer Israel Sack purchased the Jaffrey house at auction. That November, Sack gave the property to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. The museum removed two interiors and a cupboard from the 18th-century mansion before selling it to a developer. In the summer of 1920, the house was demolished. In the 1960s, the entire site was destroyed during the construction of the Federal Building (later known as the Thomas J. McIntyre Federal Building). |
