  14. S1053 - Centennial Committee to Portsmouth Charitable Foundation

Money that was collected in 1832 for the celebration of the centennial of George Washington's birth was not all spent. A surplus of $8.37, deposited in the Portsmouth Savings Bank and left dormant, grew to about $4000 by 1984. This folder documents the successful efforts made to transfer the money to the Greater Portsmouth Charitable Foundation by attorney David Sanderson. Folder includes original bankbook and copy of an 1882 newspaper article.
