SS-569 Pioneering research submarine commissioned in 1953. The teardrop-shaped hull represented the Navy's first attempt to design a boat meant to travel under water. It was the prototype for nuclear submarines. Decommissioned 1 September 1972. Opened to the public in 1985 as Joe Sawtelle's Albacore Museum located on Market Street just beyond the city center. Open to the public. |
