Notes |
On leaving school, Whipple sailed on board a merchant vessel. His voyages were chiefly confined to the West Indies, and, proving successful, he amassed a considerable fortune. In 1759, he relinquished seafaring life, and commenced business with a brother at Portsmouth. Whipple early entered into the controversy between Great Britain and the colonies. He was appointed to the Provincial Committee of Safety and to the Continental Congress. In 1777, the Assembly of New Hampshire appointed Whipple brigadier general, and he commanded the troops of New Hampshire at Saratoga. On this expedition Whipple was accompanied by his slave Prince, a native of Africa. After independence, Whipple served in various government posts, with much honor to himself, and to the general acceptance of his constituents.
