Capt. of Invalid Guards; first worked as a "bobbin boy" in the cotton factory when his family arrived in Portsmouth, then he learned mule spinning before he entered the livery / stable business with his father and brother until the outbreak of the Civil War; in 1860, elected commissary general, having charge over all arms in state and delivering them to the first and second regiments to fit them for active duty; during the outbreak of war, he was the first man in the state to enlist in the Civil War and received commission as the first recruiting officer for Portsmouth and enlisted the first company (Co. K, Second Regiment), which he became the captain. During the retreat of the first battle of Bull Run, he was severely injured by a fall while jumping a stream called Club Run, and he was unable to continue as captain. He remained in the military under various positions; in 1867, he was appointed messenger of the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.; in 1869, he was inspector in the Boston custom house before transferring to the custom house in Portsmouth in 1872-1873 and removed from that position in 1885; along with another man started the Penny Post, a daily newspaper; appointed postmaster during the Harrison adminstration before being removed for "offensive partisanship" and then later reappointed in the McKinley adminstration from 1897 until his death. |
