Captain of the Portsmouth Police Department, served for 22 years on the force until his death after he joined in 1930; he was a motorcycle officer for several years before being appointed captain on Nov. 5, 1948, the first time in the department's history a patrolman was appointed captain; his prior occupation was as a bus driver for the Boston and Maine Transportation Company; he was a penologist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard prison from 1942 to 1946; he served the Marine Corps from 1925 to 1929 and then again in WWII.

Died by suicide, shooting himself in the mouth in his upstairs bedroom. His wife was in the basement doing laundry at the time. She heard the gunshot and discovered his body. He had been described as despondent over a period of time after he suffered a heart condition.
