Letter from Samuel Penhallow in Portsmouth, N.H., to Captain Arthur Browne in London and forwarded to Gibraltar (British overseas territory). Dated October 21, 1774, and forwarded December 24, 1774. Pertains to a legacy from Browne's father's estate consisting of substantial acreage of land in Holderness, N.H., as well as the disposition of his father's mansion. Arthur Browne was a member of "his Majestys Fiftyeighth Regiment," based at Gibraltar in 1774. Partial transcription by Kinley Gregg: New Hampshire Portsmouth October 21 Sir Yours of the 20th of April ult. acknowledged Receipt of the Executors Letter informing you of the [letter torn] of your Father came to hand July ult. via Philadelphia In answer to your enquiry of your legacy of the land at Holderness I am informed there is Three hundred acres of it Beside eight acres of Interval, also One hundred acres of Land more in said Holderness given to your father by the Proposal not yet Laid out; this Town is distant from Wolfborough about thir ty miles where Governor Wentworth has a fine Farm and distant from this Town [Portsmouth] about Eighty miles, I suppose the present value may be (now in a State of nature) about thirty Pounds [sterling] but with other Land the value will soon increase [letter torn] especially as two Counts[?] are annually held at Plimouth within two miles of it. It is above two months since I enquired of Mr. Livermore concerning this Land who told me when he returned to Londonderry he would send me a particular aus.[?] of it, which have not received nor much expect it soon. I desired him to have some improvements made which with any Taxes due the Executors would answer till you should refund it or [letter torn] Mr. Livermore or some other for that purpose, Mr. [Livermore] has got a fine Farm there, beside his being in the family [letter torn] reason I mention him; Thro' his great urgency the [Executors] sold your Fathers Mansion House to Oliver Whipple leg[islator] August last for £490 Lawful money (your sister will [letter torn] her some in it) of which on the 8th of said month he made [letter torn] payment to the Executors of £160 Lawful money which [letter torn] Less in my hands secure as my own money in a [letter torn] in my Counting Room, the next night some evil minded person or persons Broke into my House who took Stole and carried away the whole of that money, upon which a Search Warrant was issued but none was found. It was also [letter torn] and tho' an ample reward was offered for apprehending the Person none has been discovered. The Plate was divided between Mrs. Livermore and Mrs. Sargent the whole [illegible] a Soup Ladle Mrs. Rogers had; Jesse grew so troublesome that neither Mr. Livermore nor Mrs. Rogers could keep him [The first page of the letter ends here, but the sentence continues on the second page to describe the sale of Jesse, an enslaved man belonging to the Browne family, who was sold to Thomas Thompson.
