Admin/Biographical History |
After the War of 1812, the concept of the enrolled militia began to dwindle. The militia comprised a range of citizens, from shopkeepers to farmers, who were responsible for their own supplies and had to pay fines for not appearing at muster. By the 1840s, the militia was nearly obsolete. Maine and Vermont eliminated their militias in 1844, and Connecticut eliminated its militia in 1846. New Hampshire did not eliminate its militia until 1851. However, just a decade later during the Civil War, militias were reinstated. New Hampshire maintained two regiments of the militia after the Civil War, adding a third regiment in 1878. The New Hampshire Militia became the New Hampshire National Guard in 1879. |
